Dell XPS 17 9700

Impressively small for a 17-inch laptop, with the latest and greatest hardware and 9 hours of battery, but it’s heavy, lacks legacy ports and it loves to show fingerprints.

The Dell XPS 17 is really heavy — about five and a half pounds. But you’re only likely to see life-changing improvements if you’re often doing tasks that take full advantage of the powerful chips: the Core i7-10875H and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Max Q.

Is the Dell XPS 17 better than the XPS 15? With a bigger 17-inch screen, faster RTX 2060 Max-Q graphics, 8-core i7-10875H processor & Vapor Chamber Cooling – is the XPS 17 worth paying extra and does it fix the XPS 15’s heat throttling issues?

Can Dell dominate the 17-inch market the same way it captured the 15-inch market? The XPS 17 is surprisingly compact with specifications that read like something twice the size, but a few small details miss the mark.

Lisa Gade reviews the Dell XPS 17 (9700), the new 17” model in the XPS lineup of premium laptops. Though the footprint isn’t much bigger than the already compact and slim XPS 15, Dell managed to pack a 17” IPS class 16:10 aspect ratio display. It’s available with a full HD+ or wide gamut 4K+ display, both rated at 500 nits with HDR 400 support. The notebook runs Windows 10 on Intel 10th gen, 45 watt CPUs up to an 8-core i9. It’s available with NVIDIA RTX 2060 Max-Q or GTX 1650 Ti dedicated graphics. It has an MS Precision trackpad, white backlit keyboard, 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports, Wi-Fi 6, upgradable RAM and M.2 SSDs and two forms of biometrics. It’s geared toward content creation and consumption, though it can handle some gaming too.

Dell’s XPS 17 is a reminder of just how useful such a big screen can be, as well as how far modern laptop designs have come.

Dell’s largest XPS laptop in years is appealing to anyone who demands the most performance possible and an enormous screen. It’s a bit hefty, but still far smaller than 17-inch laptops from years ago.

If you told me you were buying a 17-inch laptop in 2020, I’d call you crazy. There are only a handful of 17-inch laptops available, and with how good 15-inch laptops are, they’re hardly worth your time. That is, unless you’re talking about the new Dell XPS 17. Unlike most 17-inchers, the XPS 17 is more than just a big screen. It adds performance. Serious performance. The kind even the XPS 15 can’t offer. I expect a lot out of a laptop that costs nearly $3,000, but with the Nvidia RTX 2060 under the hood and an expansive 17-inch screen, this might be the ultimate content creation workstation. Find out more in my Dell XPS 17 hands on review.
