As I was reading about laptop setups on various reviewers’ websites and tech fora’s to write about finding the perfect gaming laptop setup, I wondered, what does a beginner need to create a gaming laptop setup? So what did I do, I started researching and working on this article!
Whether money is no object or you are looking for a budget laptop gaming setup, there are quite a few elements to consider when it comes to a gamers’ space or a battlestation as the cool kids call it these days. What I found is that every laptop setup for the winning game starts with the same things. To help you out see the list below.
- Budget – How much are you willing to spend?
- Space – How much space do you have for your battlestation?
- Monitor – Can you use extra screen space?
- Keyboard – Do you prefer mechanical keys or the ones on your laptop?
- Mouse – Do you like your trackpad or would you like to have a gaming mouse?
- Controller – Are you planning on using any gamepads?
- RGB lights – Will these be used during gameplay?
- Aesthetics – What kind of look will you go for?
You might not know exactly know what you need yet, so keep reading! I’ll cover all these points.
How much are you willing to spend on your gaming laptop setup? Your budget determines how much you can add to your gaming setup. For instance, if you like RGB, want the fanciest mechanical RGB keyboard with a high refresh rate gaming mouse, and a 1440p 240Hz screen, you can expect to pay a higher price. If you are on a budget, you might want to stick with some simpler things, like just a mouse, keyboard, and cheap monitor.
To make things easier I’ll add some examples here later on ;).
How big will your gaming area be? Will it be in the living room or do you have a dedicated gaming room (like some lucky people)? Knowing how much space you have and where you tend to game a lot will help you narrow down what you can fit in, and what needs to be left. A good example is, when gaming in the living room, you can hook up your laptop to the TV a desk will not be needed in this case. If you’re one of the lucky people with a gaming room, you can fit in a large desk for your future 4 monitor setup.
Do you already have a display set-up for work purposes? You could try out different monitors until you find something suitable for gaming. There are plenty of options from 1080p screens to 4K displays.
A big 4k screen makes everything look better. You don’t necessarily need high resolution, though; screens with a high resolution of 1080p or 1440p are good enough for gaming. You’ll want a higher refresh rate if you can afford it to make everything as smooth as possible.
This was one of the first things I bought because it just adds that much room to move your windows in.
What type of keyboard do you prefer membrane (regular keyboards) or mechanical? Mechanical keyboards offer great tactile feedback but they also cost more than standard ones. They’re worth every penny though. On the other hand, regular keyboards come with fewer features and aren’t nearly as comfortable but are very affordable making these an excellent choice if you start out.
If you plan on playing FPS games, then you should definitely get yourself a gaming mouse. These mice usually feature programmable buttons which allow you to customize them according to your needs. Some even include adjustable DPI settings.
Mice come in two varieties: optical mice and laser mice. Optical mice work by tracking movement across a surface such as glass or plastic. Laser mice emit light from beneath the mouse body and track movements based on reflections. Both types of mice require a great mouse pad to increase accuracy.
To make a cheap setup for a real gamer you cannot forget RGB lights. Of course, you can buy a laptop with RGB also some gaming keyboards and mice. But some well-known gamers use some kind of RGB lights. This will not only benefit your eyes, but it will also give a great gaming experience if well done.
Besides the so much-needed RGB lights, you also need a great-looking gaming setup. When you spend hours behind your desk, it’s always a pleasure to sit at a great-looking gaming setup instead of a Cheetos crumbed one (maybe you like the latter more who knows). A great-looking setup can have a real vibe to it, from minimal white to a vibrant cyberpunk look.
