Apple MacBook Pro (2021)

$2,449.00

TL;DR review: If we can believe Peter McKinnon, Matti Haapoja, Potato Jet, Linus Tech Tips, Notenbookcheck, LaptopMag, and the Tech Chap, this laptop is worth every single penny you put into it. When watching and reading their reviews, you can clearly understand why. The all-new Apple M1 Pro and M1 Max SoC’s are amazing and integrated very well with the laptops’ hardware. Add a liquid retina XDR display with all the ports you could eat (welcome back HDMI, and SD card slot), and you’ve one hell of a computer.

Description

So I was hyped, very hyped with seeing the announcement of the new Apple MacBook Pro of 2021. Now that reviewers like Notebookcheck, The verge, and even Linus Tech Tips took their time to review the new Apple MacBook Pro thoroughly, I can definitely and confidently say that this is an amazing feed from Apple. So, with that excitement, let’s find out what 30+ reviewers think about Apple’s latest MacBook Pro.

Doing research in my spare time on tech is a thing I really love to do! When you decide to buy well-researched tech via an affiliate link on this site I’ll earn tech/gadget money (woohoo!) and you don’t pay a higher price!

Is Apple MacBook Pro (2021) worth it?

Yup, if we can believe Peter McKinnon, Matti Haapoja, Potato Jet (aka Gene Nagata), Linus Tech Tips, Notenbookcheck, LaptopMag, and the Tech Chap, this laptop is worth every single penny you put into it. When watching and reading their reviews, you can clearly understand why. Peter McKinnon, Matti Haapoja, and Gene, YouTubers well-known for their photo-/videographer skills, bought the Apple MacBook Pro. While Peter and Matti have the M1 Max, Gene decided to buy the lowest spec’d M1 Pro. What Gene found amazed me, to be honest. In a nutshell, the lowest spec’d MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro, already delivers the performance you could want from this laptop as a video editor!

When editing in Premiere Pro, 5k at 50FPS, I saw the lowest spec’d Apple MacBook M1Pro struggle. This was easily fixed by either having 1/2 preview or turning down the FPS to a normal 24 FPS. While the power was out, I could test the amazing battery life of the MacBook M1 Pro, without a dongle (aaw, yeah!) straight for the SD card. What really amazed me while editing the video, is that the Battery Life with the M1 Pro processor, got through a 5 hours long editing process, non-stop!

Potato Jet (aka Gene Nagata) – Review

Tech YouTuber The Tech Chap spends about 50% of his time on video editing, he did go for the M1 Max and didn’t feel the need to touch his video editing PC, and that’s saying a lot. Anthony from Linus Tech Tips discussed that this is an excellent machine for professionals who need to edit videos for a living. Although they point out that if you’re not rendering, video editing, or designing all day long the Apple MacBook Pro might not be the best laptop for you, for now. This is due to the fact Apple’s GPU isn’t widely supported yet. With that being said, it’s obvious that Apple did a great job with their all-new Apple M1 Pro and M1 Max SoC, and integrated it very well with the laptops’ hardware. Add a liquid retina XDR display with all the ports you could eat (welcome back HDMI, and SD card slot), and you’ve one hell of a computer.

It’s fantastic to see Apple working towards not just making a fantastic, yet sleek laptop. They’re always looking to improve things and on this laptop, they have achieved it. The MacBooks are some of the best-designed laptops in my opinion.

9 things reviewers like

  • Incredible performance
  • Very quiet
  • Beautiful Liquid Retina XDR Display with accurate colors
  • Extremely high HDR brightness
  • Great ports, HDMI port & SD card reader
  • Incredible battery life for M1 Pro model
  • No More Touchbar
  • High-quality and sturdy chassis
  • Comfortable Magic Keyboard

7 things reviewers dislike

  • Expensive
  • Upgrading RAM and Storage is expensive
  • Software ecosystem still coming around to Apple’s GPU ideas
  • Notch (does not look good and there are some functional issues)
  • SDR brightness limited to 500 nits
  • Neither HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6E, or Wi-Fi 6 160 MHz, nor Bluetooth 5.2
  • No USB A Port

Who should buy the Apple MacBook Pro (2021)?

You should consider this laptop if you are a video editor, designer, or are a creator as your profession. I mean, in almost all the 30+ reviews, the MacBook Pro comes out on top when scrubbing through the live view in 4k or in rendering speed tests. Now, if you’re looking to game on it, you can expect some poor gaming experience for the price you pay. Anthony from Linus Tech Tips compares this laptop gaming performance with the RTX 3050. This can be good for some gamers, but you really can get a lot more gaming power at this price, and I mean a much more gaming power. For everyone else, the Apple Macbook Air is the best laptop for you if you want an Apple for some everyday tasks.

With that being said it’s fantastic to see Apple working towards not just making a fantastic, yet sleek laptop, but also listening to their fans. I mean they have finally taken a step back and added the HDMI port and SD card slot again. It’s nice that they’re always looking to improve things and on this laptop, and they have achieved it. The MacBooks are some of the best-designed laptops in my opinion.

Which Apple MacBook Pro (2021) should you buy?

The Apple MacBook Pro comes in 2 forms, with a 14 or 16-inch screen. Inside the Apple MacBook Pro, you’ll find a powerful M1 Pro or M1 Max SoC. Jup an SoC, Apple has integrated the CPU, GPU, and memory in one chip. This means these parts can work together even better and faster, compared to lose components, and will give you an even faster and smoother Apple macOS experience.

Now back on topic, you should consider the M1 Max if you’re a professional content creator, need a powerful device, want the maximum amount of memory, or just want the latest and greatest offered by Apple. The M1 Max version is best used for creating high-quality videos, with a silky smooth experience, or creating high-quality designs.

With that being said, for most people looking to buy the new Apple MacBook Pro, reviewers recommend buying the M1 Pro version with about at least 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage. Although this laptop is not as powerful as the M1 Max, you’ll only get more graphics performance, which in most cases is not needed that much.

Is Apple MacBook Pro (2021) good for content creators?

If I can believe the reviews, I want to say that it is. For the price, I think it’s very worth it. You get a great machine that does a lot of things right. The newly integrated M1 SoC’s from Apple deliver on any computational front. For a creator, this means getting super-fast rendering speeds and a smooth and flawless scrubbing through the timeline in 4k, and no stutter within any design tool.

Is Apple MacBook Pro (2021) good for gamers?

At this price point, you can get a much better gaming laptop than the Apple MacBook of 2021. The Apple MacBook Pro needs Rosetta in most games. This will significantly decrease your gaming experience with this laptop. Anthony says Rosetta will only help so much, but the gaming performance is comparable to a gaming laptop equipped with an RTX 3050. If you want something at this price, you could take a look at the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, it’s much more capable than the MacBook pro.

GAME BENCHMARKS

Reviewers wouldn’t be reviewers if they didn’t try to game on it, so Linus, Notbookcheck, and Max Tech did so and gave some benchmarks with them. Although the MacBook Max does a great job in a demanding game like Mankind divided, Linus even mentions it looks pretty good, and Max Tech does some really great popular game testing, it’s still not as good as a gaming laptop for this price point, but that is to be expected for now.

At least 60 FPS is recommended, but higher gives smoother gameplay.

Note, these benchmarks are from Notebookcheck I can suggest looking at this comprehensive review for even more in-depth insights

Apple’s shiny new 16” M1 MacBook Pro has been out long enough (and in my hands) for the metaphorical shine to wear off. Is it still performing well for speed, heat and stability? I’ve been using the M1 Max version as my daily driver since launch day, and I’ll tell you how it’s holding up in this video.

The Macbook Pro M1 is the best laptop for a lot of people who can afford its price. The Macbook battery life, performance, and more are second to none but after 60 days I wanted to give it a long-term review and discuss the positive and negative aspects after using it for this long.

Although with the 16-inch MacBook Pro you don’t need an extra computer, just plug everything and you’re good to go, I would go for the 14-inch. The 14″ Apple Macbook Pro is just the perfect size. The display is big enough, if you need more just plug it in. The Battery life is really great, not as good as the 16″, but how many people need that much battery life anyway? The small size is so nice and convenient. The bottom line is, when you don’t travel as much, from work to home, go with the 16″ it’s the best thing you can get. But if you travel a lot the 14″ is the way to go. All the M1 versions are great for creators.

Apple has given you a choice, though these are no cheap machines. But if everything you do depends on the Apple MacBooks then these laptops, add a lot of value. You probably should have one in your bag already. Because the improvements on previous models are just that drastic. Apple really made a home run with these laptops. The big question is, do you need one? If the answer is yes, you won’t be disappointed. If the answer is maybe, go for the MacBook Air, this is a great laptop.

Overall Apple did a great job with their new 2021 MacBook Pro versions and listened to their fanbase. Apple delivered a laptop that is finally better than the M1 MacBook Pro and the 2013 15 inch MacBook Pro, the two MacBook Pros that impressed me the most. Although the new M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro models are quite expensive, you can expect some great improvements. The baseline 14 inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro SoC will be a great option for most people.

The extra GPU horsepower and memory bandwidth you get are only situationally needed. Apple silicon native apps with metal support may change moving forward, but it will limit the M1 Max SoCs in the coming years. As of right now the Apple M1 Max SoC only adds value when you’re doing high-end video editing. For everything besides high-end video editing, we’re looking at much more similar results to an RTX 3050 Ti, than the RTX 3080 promised by Apple.

Apple has finally released M1 versions of the 16” MacBook Pro for creatives. The 2021 model is available with M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, and we tested both for this review so you can see the performance differences. The macOS laptop has a striking 16.2” Mini LED XDR display with 120Hz refresh (aka Pro Motion), Magic Keyboard with Fn row (no more touch bar), Thunderbolt 4, MagSafe 3 fast charging, and the return of HDMI and an SD card slot. It’s available with up to 64GB unified memory, up to 8TB storage and your choice of a 16, 24 or 32 core GPU (we test the 16 and 32 core GPUs). A 100 WHr battery, compact charger and long battery life round up the features. We compare these new 16” models’ performance to the outgoing 2019 model as well as competing Windows laptops like the Razer Blade 15, Dell XPS 15, Surface Laptop Studio and desktop replacement gaming laptops.

I’m incredibly impressed with the latest MacBook Pro. I haven’t been a daily Mac user for nine years – I switched to Windows and never looked back – but if I needed a powerful laptop today, I’d seriously consider switching teams for these new M1 models. That said, while it’s an incredible laptop, it’s just a mediocre gaming laptop, and you do still have the more locked-down nature of macOS and those first-gen quirks – like incompatible apps and a rather dangerous factory reset procedure – that may put off some folks. But if you’re the kind of person this laptop is targeting, and you check compatibility for the tools you need first, the latest MacBook Pro will hit the mark.

From a pure performance perspective, the Apple M1 Pro is an impressive SoC. Performance does vary a bit from application to application, but generally the CPU is very competitive with today’s best x86 laptop CPUs from Intel and AMD. In the best cases, where an app can truly benefit from the M1 Pro’s specific features, like its extreme memory bandwidth, the M1 Pro can crush what’s available on Windows-based devices. At other times, performance is roughly equivalent to CPUs like the Ryzen 9 5900HX and Core i9-11980HK, and in the worst scenarios, like CPU-based video encoding, it can fall behind. On the whole though, you’re definitely getting modern cutting-edge performance.
