The 10 Best Thin & Light laptops of 2022, according to tech expert The Tech Chap

One of my favorite Tech YouTubers, Tom The Tech Chap, listed his favorite Thin and Light laptops. What I found surprising is that the list doesn’t contain only laptops. Number 10 can surprise you.

Dell XPS 13 plus front review
Dell XPS 13 Plus

Nice to look at and with great performance; what more could you want?

2022 Apple MacBook Air Laptop with M2 chip: 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD Storage, Backlit Keyboard, 1080p FaceTime HD Camera. Works with iPhone and iPad; Midnight
Apple MacBook Air M2

If you’re into the Apple system or don’t want to worry about specs, this is the one for you.

LG Gram

Want a very light laptop? Pick this laptop, its name says it all. Very lightweight LG Gram.

The Dell XPS 13 plus

So the Dell XPS 13 plus is, well, like the regular XPS 13 but with slightly better overall specs, a bigger battery, a better camera, and speakers. And it has a fancy new futuristic design. Not everyone will like the new design, the no-gap keyboard, the invisible edge touchpad – which you’ll have to feel your way around – and the capacitive touch function key row (cough touch bar cough), but I think it looks stunning.

The laptop also has a nice 16 by 10 display. You can get it in a full HD LCD, 3K OLED, or a 4k LCD touchscreen. The Tech Chap has got the OLED model, and it’s a really beautiful screen. When you’re getting used to an OLED screen, it’s hard to go back to an LCD screen when you’ve enjoyed the deep inky blacks and rich colors of the OLED. The 3K resolution is the perfect balance of sharpness and battery life.

The XPS 13 Plus is a powerful laptop with an Intel 12th generation P series of chips and up to 32 gigs of Ram. With a price of 1200, it’s close to an Apple MacBook Air M2. But when you go for The Tech Chaps recommendation, 16GB of RAM and an OLED screen, the price goes up to 1500, which is a bit pricey.

Apple MacBook Air M2

The MacBook Air M2 is a great laptop, but it’s not as revolutionary as the 2020 M1 Air. The Macbook M1 Air is still a good all-around MacBook and is a better value, thin and light laptop for most people, but if you want a leaner, meaner, faster, and better-looking MacBook Air, the M2 is the one to get. It’s quite expensive, but it’s certainly worth it.

The differences between the MacBook Air M1 and the MacBook Air M2 are:

  • The M2 is thinner and has better bezels
  • The webcam is much improved
  • MagSafe is included
  • It comes in fancy color options

Tom of The Tech Chap suggests going for the 512GB storage and 16GB of RAM.

LG Gram 16T90P-K.AAE7U1 16″ Touch 16GB 512GB SSD Core i7-1165G7 2.4GHz Win10H, Black
from $799.66

The downside of the LG Gram is that it feels more plasticky and cheap. If you don’t mind, the 2022 model comes with a 12th-generation Intel P series of chips, making it a desirable ultrabook. You can also get it with a bigger screen size if you want. The price is higher, but you are paying for the thin and light factor. Tom suggests that if you can get it with the plus view chucked in for free, it’s a very tempting purchase.

Intel Core i7 | 16 GB RAM | Intel Iris Xe Graphics | 512 GB | SSD | 13.3 inch
from $810.95

The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro is a great choice for a thin and light laptop. It’s very lightweight and has a sleek design. It comes with a 13 or 15-inch 1080p 60Hz AMOLED screen, which makes colors look more vivid and life-like. Unfortunately, it has a 16:9 ratio, which makes this laptop look a little dated nowadays. It has an Intel 12th Gen P series inside, which can do everything you need. The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro has the Dell XPS 13 plus looks and weighs about as much as the LG Gram. Overall, if you’re in the market for a thin and light laptop that won’t break the bank, The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro is a great choice. You get the sleek modern design, portability, and power all in one package.

Acer Swift 3

from $949.99

The Acer Swift 3 is a great choice for a thin and light laptop because it’s very lightweight and has a sleek design. It comes with a powerful Intel I5 or I7 12th Gen processor H, which makes it much better than Intel’s P series CPUs. It’s perfect for photo editing, having tons of tabs in chrome open, or even some light gaming. It also has a beautiful 14-inch quad HD OLED display, perfect for a laptop like this. If Tom looks at the ports, it has a couple of USB Type-A, Thunderbolt ports, and an HDMI connection, but no SD card reader. Overall this laptop is a great laptop for the price, with great performance and a beautiful display.

Tom’s tip: If you are looking for something better, look at the Acer Swift 5 lineup. It gives better performance, looks fancier, and is much better overall.

from $1,079.99

The Asus ZenBook S13 is a great choice for a thin and light laptop. It’s very lightweight and has a sleek design. It’s the only laptop on Tom’s list with an AMD processor (which is insane). It runs the AMD Ryzen 7 6800 U processor, which is as powerful as Intel’s 12th Gen series CPU, but the AMD shreds Intel regarding the graphics. Weighing just 1kg or 2 pounds makes this a very capable thin, and light laptop. Only the LG Gram 13-inch weighs a tiny bit less. It has a stunning Quad HD OLED display, 16 GB of RAM, and some storage. And for that spec of the laptop, it’s relatively good value. However, you might be tempted to buy one just because it has the Asus logo, which looks like a Star Trek communicator!
